What happens to your Smart Pension savings if you leave your job

What should my employer do?

Your employer needs to tell Smart Pension you’re leaving and give us a leaving date. They do this by updating your employee details through their account with us or when they upload their payroll data to our website.

The employer can also make a request to Smart Pension to update the employee details directly via their admin platform, without intervention through their employer account.

What can I do?

When you leave your job, be sure to keep your details up to date so you can continue to easily access your Smart Pension account, including your email address and home address.

If you’re below the age of 55, you can:

  • Do nothing and leave your pension pot with us

  • Transfer your pension to another scheme, for example, your new employer's scheme

  • Combine your pensions if your new employer also uses Smart Pension to provide their pension scheme

If you're 55 or older, you can do any of the above, or you can start to access your savings and explore your retirement options. For help with this, take a look at the planning for retirement section of our website.

Doing nothing

You can log into your account at any time to check on your pension or adjust the funds that you invest your savings in. We’ll continue to send you annual statements and let you know when it’s time to access your savings.

Transfer your pension

You can transfer your pension to another scheme. For example, your new employer's scheme.

Combine your Smart Pension pots

If your new employer also uses Smart Pension to provide their workplace pension scheme, you can transfer your savings from one account to another so that they're all in one place. You’ll need to make sure that you’ve passed the one month opt out window for the scheme that you are leaving before the transfer can be made.
