If you’re struggling with debt, please don’t suffer in silence. It happens to all of us at some point in our lives, and the good news is that there are lots of places you can turn to for support, information and help. Often something as simple as a conversation with a friend – or even a stranger – can be a vital first step in putting things right. From there, you can begin taking control of your finances and start building a more secure future.
The National Debtline, a charity offering free and independent debt advice. Their support is anonymous and confidential and they’ve helped thousands of people in all kinds of situations to take control of their debts.
The Samaritans, whose support is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. No judgement, no pressure. Whatever you’re going through, a Samaritan will face it with you.
Turn2Us is a charity that helps people who are struggling financially. You can use their benefits calculator to see what financial help might be available to you.
The Breathing Space scheme can help you with temporary protection from your creditors while you get debt advice and make a plan. This support can be very useful if you are becoming overwhelmed by telephone calls and letters from people chasing you for money
A surprisingly useful amount of information is available in the ‘dealing with debt’ section of the Government’s MoneyHelper service, while the gov.uk website contains a wide range of support if you are struggling with debt. The Citizens Advice Bureau network and the Money Saving Expert website are useful resources, too.
As with any problem, the sooner you take action, the better. Whether you’ve made progress on tackling your debt or aren’t sure where to start, there are resources to support you. To make your money go further, consider speaking with a financial coach – they can help you manage debt and build a solid financial path forward.
